Yucatan ユカタン半島の旅

Bacalar

メキシコ国境の町チェトゥマルから車で30分の距離にBacalarという町がある。ここは7色の湖で有名な町で、僕が今回訪れた町の中ではかなり好きな場所だった。ユカタン半島に位置しているが、陸地に囲まれているので淡水で、なぜか地面が白砂なので水がとても綺麗に見える。僕は一日と少ししか滞在しなかったが、湖が美しいのと、町の雰囲気がゆったりしているので僕はとても好きだった。街から数キロの距離のところにあるセノーテが美しく、特にCenote Cocalitosという場所がインスタ映えだった。エメラルドグリーンの砂浜にブランコとハンモックが用意してあって、写真が撮れる。また、このセノーテはビーチもあるので寝転がることもできた。

1つ難点は、物価がメキシコにしては高いことか。タコスが一つ15ペソもする。僕はホステルで会った韓国人の友達と一緒に1日で2食もチャーハンを作って食べた。物価が安く、時間がもしあったなら確実に後2日はいたな。

Tulum

トゥルーム遺跡のあるこの町。僕の友達の交換留学生たちはTulumを愛してやまないので行ってみることにした。情報ではかなりのパーティータウンと聞いていた。正直この町に行くという目的がなければチェトゥマルの空港からグアダラハラに帰ってた。中にはここに三週間もいたという人もいた。まず朝、トゥルーム遺跡に行った。ここは泳げることで有名な遺跡で、遺跡自体は1時間もあれば回れるのだが、ビーチに寝っ転がりダラダラできるところが良い。さらに、ホステルで自転車を借りて、セノーテに行くのもおすすめだ。ただ、僕はグアテマラ、ベリーズとそれまで旅してきて、これほどまでの数の観光客に久しぶりに見た。どの場所も観光客はいたし、アンティグアも多かったけど、圧倒的観光客の多さにびっくりしてしまった。ここから先は全てがtouristicなんだなと思った。メキシコ観光で1番華がある部分だしね。

Valladolid

この街とその次のMeridaは行く予定ではなかったが、TulumとBacalarを早めに切り上げたので行くことにした。いろんな人がユカタン半島で一番好きな街だというので行ってみることにした。確かに物価も観光地と比べて安いし、人も優しいし、街並みもコロニアル調で綺麗だ。街の中心地から4ブロックほどの距離に大きめのセノーテがある。でも僕はこの街をそこまで好きになれなかった。その理由は、ユカタン州全体に言えることだが、人が僕をガン見してくることと、車の交通量がまあまあ多いのに信号機がなく、歩行者にとって不便だったからだ。グアダラハラやこの旅で訪れた場所ではあまりなかったが、欧米人は多いもののアジア人は少ないのかジィーッとみられる。

チチェンイッツァにも行った。Valladolidからバスで45分。僕はメキシコの学生証を持っているので無料で入場できたが、一般の外国人は日本円で約3000円の入場料がかかる。しかも僕はこの遺跡を好きになれなかった。なんでも数年前に遺跡に登った人が転落死して、それから遺跡の建築自体に登れなくなったとのこと。僕は今までに行った遺跡では建築に登って座り、何世紀も前にここに登ったマヤ人は何を感じたんだろうと考えるのが好きだったのに、ここでは登ることができなかった。また、観光客もカンクンやCozumel島に来るクルーズ船の団体客が大型バスでやってくるのでとても多かった。午前中に行って正解だった。また旧チチェンの大部分がロープで入れないようになっていた。

ピンクレイクにも行った。これは日本人の間ではかなり有名な観光地で、ローカルバスを乗り継いで行くのはかなり大変だったが間違いなくインスタ映えだったし、満足だった。途中で日本人の方にお会いして一緒に観光できたのと、ガイドが写真を撮るのがうまかった。ここは海から水を引いて塩を製造している場所で、ピンクレイクから先には塩の工場があった。ピンク色は死んだプランクトンの色らしい。湖も全部で24個作ってあり、塩分濃度が濃くなるほどピンク色になるらしい。僕らが立ち入ることのできた湖は塩分濃度が47%だった。カンクンからのツアー客はチチェンイッツァ、ピンクレイク、セノーテのツアーに1日300ドルも払うらしい。どっかから来て観光に1日しか時間がないならいいけど、全部含めてValladolidから1500円で行ける場所に大金を払うよりは、そこに行く手段まで含めて楽しめたらいいよね。帰りのタクシーでは運転手と1時間くらいスペイン語練習できたし、日本人と久しぶりに話せたし、しかも湖から5分も歩くと静かでめちゃめちゃ綺麗な海が見えた。ここは自然保護区になっているらしく、ホテルや観光施設が建てられないようになっているらしい。これからピンクレイクは多分観光地化していくと思うけど、きれいで静かな海だけはそのままの隠れスポットにしておいてほしい。

Merida

メキシコで一番治安のいい都市Merida。毎曜日夜になると市内の公園や劇場で何かしらのイベントを開催していて、僕はそれを観に夜11時くらいまで外を出歩いていたのだが、大丈夫そうだった。街がヨーロッパ風で僕がこの旅で訪れた都市の中ではグアテマラシティに次ぐ大きさだった。セントロの北には19世紀に計画的に建築が始まり大邸宅が並ぶモンテホ通りがある。

ユカタン州は隣のキンタナルー州と比べ観光客が少なく、地域の伝統が残る美しい州であった。しかし、僕の検測では他の州、他の国と比べ極端にフランス人とロシア人が多く、アジア人が極端に少ない印象である。だからアジア人に対する人種差別がひどく、僕が今までに訪れたメキシコのどの州よりも人種差別がひどいと感じた。特に男性2人組以上が「おい見ろよ、中国人がいるぜ」とこそこそ言ってこっちを見てくる確率はかなり高い。別にこれだけで街の評価が下がるとかじゃないけど、街を歩いていて通りすがりにchinoとか目を横に広げるジェスチャーされるのはあまり気分が良いものではない。

この街からバスで1時間ほどの場所にある世界遺産ウシュマルにも訪れた。ここは観光客がチチェンイッツァの百分の一くらいしかいなくて、ピラミッドを見飽きた人でもここのピラミッドは使用している石が丸石なので形が丸みを帯びていて、感動するだろう。僕はメキシコの学生証で無料で入れたが、3000円を払って入る価値はあるのではないかと思う。さらにマヤ人の石造りの建築の間にイグアナが住んでいてそれを観察するのも面白い。ただMeridaからでも遠い秘境である。

Playa del Carmen

昔はカンクンの喧騒を嫌った欧米人がバカンスを楽しみにやってきた場所らしいが、ここ数年で人気が高まり、完全に第二のカンクンと化している。僕が見た限りではアメリカ人の金持ちが多くて、金が余って仕方ない人が高級コンドミニアムを購入しているイメージだった。ビーチはほぼ全部が公共ビーチなんだけれど、ビーチの5メートル手前まで高級住宅が立ち並んでいるのでビーチがすごく狭く見えた。日本のようにショッピングモールには誰もが知っているブランドが並んでいて、スタバもコンビニも50メートルおきにあり何の制約もなしに生活することができる。何も考えずにSubwayに入り、慣れ親しんだ味のサンドイッチを食べる。僕は久しぶりに東京にいるのと変わらない生活を送ることができた。また、今までの冬休みの10週間＋メキシコでの生活合わせて半年以上もこのような生活ができていず、よくここまでこれたな自分と感じている。グアダラハラにいても、わざわざUberか友達に連れて行ってもらわないとショッピングモールにも行けない。でもホステルから徒歩の距離にモールが2つもあったので、靴を買った。旅を始めてから歩数計をみると毎日平均2万歩以上は歩いていて、前の靴は壊れかかっていた。約5000円強でバーゲンのFILAの靴を買うことができた、メキシコは靴とZARAが安い。僕は今まで貧乏旅行をしていたけど、自分がこのメキシコではお金持ちであることに気がついてしまった。なぜなら僕が購入したこの靴の値段、留学前にやっていた塾バイトの時給3時間分だからだ。僕は貧乏旅行もできるし、正直もっとお金を使う旅行もできる。自分が恵まれていることを再認識した。

また、Playa del Carmenではキューバ産の葉巻を販売しているところが多く、自巻で葉巻を売っている店で僕はタバコサイズの葉巻を一本購入した。正直僕はタバコを吸わないので味はよくわからなかったが、タバコは燃えるのが早く5分くらいで燃え尽きてしまうのに対し、葉巻は吸っても吸っても終わらず30分くらいかかった。まず吸う行為に疲れたし、あれは1人で吸うものではないわ。ゆっくりハウスパーティーとかでみんなでシェアしたら楽しいだろうな。シーシャ見たいな感じで。葉巻はテキーラに合うらしい。

ここはアルゼンチン人が多い。最近インフレがひどく、海外に住んで仕事をしたほうがいい暮らしができるとのこと。また彼らの好きな雰囲気がユカタン半島にはあるのだろう。また、ここにはカンクンにあるような大型クラブがたくさんあって、僕は午前1時にホステルを出て一晩のオープンバーで60ドルも払うようなクラブシーンを見にクラブを見に行った。クラブはオープンエアになっていて、人々が踊っているのを見ることができたが、メキシコの普通のクラブではレゲトンが主にかかっているのに対し、ここのクラブでは英語の音楽が多めだと思った。でもみんなすごい着飾ってたけどあんまり楽しそうに踊ってる人は多くなかった。木曜だったのも関係しているかも。

今の時期は乾季で曇っていた日なんてほとんどなかったのに、こことCozumelの最後の2日間だけ曇りで残念だった。晴れていたらもうちょっといたかったけど、曇っていたからまあいいかなと思う。後、カンナビスコカインって言ってくるやつ多すぎ。正直うざすぎて背中にドラッグはやらないって書いてやろうかと思ったくらいだった。

Cozumel

帰りはカンクンから帰ろうと思っていたが、Skyscannerを見ていたらたまたま見つけたCozumel島から新学期のためにグアダラハラに帰ることにした。街から歩ける距離に空港があったこともここからのフライトを選んだ理由だ。ここはダイビングの聖地。でも僕はダイビングやったことないし、金かかるし、シュノーケリングはベリーズでやったし、何より滞在時間が1日弱しかなかったのでやらなかった。Playaよりも落ち着いていて、街を歩いていても客引きはほとんどない。

ここは観光地で物価が高いと聞いていたが、歩いていて観光客用の町と現地人の町が離れていることに気がついた。島なので全部が高いのかと思いきや、空港から南東に伸びる大通りには普通のメキシコ人の生活が営まれていて、僕は物価が安いメルカドやこの大通り周辺で食事をした。Playa del Carmenと同じくショッピングモールがあったので行ってみたが、ここは1日だけメキシコに寄港するクルーズ船客向けのお土産をたくさん販売していた。だから僕が求めているようなショッピングはできなかった。

また、Cozumelのホステルがとても良かった。なぜかというと、スタッフが英語ネイティブ、ドミトリーのベッドにカーテンが付いている、シャワーとトイレが部屋と別公共スペーズがでかくてねっころがれるソファも置いてある、清潔で施設が新しいかったからだ。今までのホステルではスタッフとスペイン語またはスタッフが英語ネイティブではないが英語で話していた。いくらスペイン語が上達したとはいえ、英語で英語ネイティブと話せる安心感は半端ない。今まで泊まったほとんどのホステルは朝光が部屋に入ってきて6時が7時には起きてしまった。けれど、ここではその心配がなかった、後ベッドでプライバシーというか人の目を全く気にしなくていいのはめちゃでかい、ただ朝起きると少し酸欠になっている気がする。シャワーとトイレが部屋と別だと夜人が寝ている中音を殺してシャワーを浴びる必要もないし、スペースがでかいとなぜか心にゆとりができる。日本って全部整ってて清潔だけどそのことって日本人にとって大事だと思う。

この旅をするうちに、僕は行く場所に対してjudgeをして、pickyになってしまっているのだと思った。僕が3泊以上した場所はグアテマラのフローレスとアンティグアだけ、アンティグアは登山があったのでしかたなくという感じだった。まあでも仕方ない、自分の好きな場所を発見するのが一番面白いし、新たな場所に行くたびに、どっかで見たことあるな、と既視感に陥るのは仕方ない。唯一グアテマラシティだけは危険だ危険だと言われ行きたかったところすべてに行けていないので心残りがあるが、初めて自分で最初から最後まで計画し、3週間も旅ができたことを嬉しく思う。スタート地点とゴール地点だけ決めてやる旅ってすごい面白い。この旅の終わりに、僕はいつかアフリカに行きたいと漠然と思うようになった。理由はいくつかある。

Bacalar

Bacalar is only 30minutes away from the border town of Chetumal. This place is famous for its seven color lakes, and could be one of my favorite places during this trip. This place is not exactly by the sea, surrounded by land, so the water is not salty. Also, the ground is white sand, which makes water reflect the sun very clear. I only stayed here for 1.5 days, but because the lake is beautiful, and the town is very laid-back, so I liked it. The recommendation of the cenotes is definitely Cenote Cocalitos, where you can take pictures by the swing and hammock for Instagram. Also, you can just lay and sleep on the beach.

One thing that I didn’t like about Bacalar was the price. It is expensive for Mexico, just one simple taco cost around 15 pesos. I cooked fried rice with the Korean guy whom I met in the hostel twice a day. If I had more time, I would’ve spent more time.

Tulum

Tulum is famous for its ruins, beautiful beaches and parties. My exchange friends can’t stop loving Tulum, so I decided to go. One of my friends stayed here for over 3 weeks. So I went to Tulum ruins in the morning. This ruin is a Mayan fortress, and you can actually swim inside the ruins. However as I went early in the day, the beach wasn’t open for some reason. One hour is enough to see the ruins. Also, there are a variety of cenotes near the town, and people rent a bike from the hostel or nearby bicycle stores and ride. However, I was so overwhelmed by the Mexicans families and travelers from all over the world, especially because it was during the long weekend. I thought all the coast is basically touristic. I think Tulum would have been much more fun with your friends, as I was traveling by myself. So, I left just after one day.

Valladolid

This city and Merida weren’t on my itinerary, but as I was ahead of schedule, I decided to go. For many tourists, Valladolid is the favorite city in Yucatan. This place is not near the water, however, there are cenotes, the prices are cheap, people are nice, and the Spanish-colonial style city is nice. There is a very nice cenote just 4 blocks from the cathedral. However, I didn’t like this city. It is because the racism towards Asian people is horrible, there is a lot of traffic but there are no traffic lights so it could be dangerous for pedestrians. In Guadalajara or other places in Mexico, people are not so racist towards Asian people but here people do gestures towards me and often called me “chino” as I passed by people.

I went to Cichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. It is only 45 minutes from Valladolid. However, it is not worth paying 500 pesos of the entrance because the ruins are so crowded and you can’t even climb on to the buildings. There was a woman a few years ago who fell from the top of Cichen Itza and passed away. Since then, tourists are not allowed to climb. Que verga wey. Because I like to climb the ruins and chill on top of it thinking what did Mayans thought when they climbed to the same place decades ago.

I went to Los Colorados, the pink lake. This place is famous for Asian people because of Instagram posts. I had to transfer local buses and it was quite long to get there, but it was definitely Instagrammable and I was satisfied because the lake was actually pink! I met a Japanese guy on the way and our guide of the lake was amazing, she took us so many cool photos. There is a salt factory on the way to the lake and in the lakes, they produce salt from the seawater. This pink color is for the dead plankton. There are in total 24 lakes, and more the density of the lake, the more it changes color. The lake we could go in to take pictures was with 47% salt. Tours for a full day from Cancun visiting cenote, Cichen Itza, and the pink lake cost around 300US. I mean if you don’t have time, but we went only paying 13US to the lake in total and it’s so much enjoyable to experience the way to get there. On the way back in the taxi, I practiced my Spanish with the taxi driver for over an hour, got to speak in Japanese for the first time in 3 weeks, and the beach just five minutes walk from the lake is so calm and beautiful. This place is a nature reserve so that hotels and touristic things can’t be built around here. I think that the pink lake would be more touristic in the future, but I hope that the beach of Las Colorados is left just like as it is in the future.

Merida

Merida is known as the safest city in Mexico. Every day in the night, there is some kind of event around the city in parks and theaters. I was walking the town late in night until 11 pm, but it was fine. This city was the second biggest city that I visited during this trip. In north of Centro, there is Paseo de Montejo which is a really nice street with 19c colonial-style buildings.

Yucatan State obviously has fewer tourists compared to Quintana Roo, and it is a beautiful state with great traditions. However, I feel that there are so many French and Russian and there are almost no Asians. I think Yucatan is the most racist state out of all the states in Mexico towards Asians. Especially, the possibility of being said like ‘Mira, hay un chino, coronavirus’ when there are groups of more than two men was quite high. I don’t want to distinguish my favorite places by racism, but it’s not so nice walking the town being segregated all the time.

I went to World Heritage Uxmal from Merida. This place only has 1/100 of tourists that they have in Cichen Itza. Even if you are tired of watching Pyramids like me, this one is very cool because of its shape of the stone which is circular. I could get into the ruins for free for the Mexican student ID, but it’s worth paying 30 bucks. Iguanas live in between the Mayan constructions and it is cool seeing them. However, it’s quite far from the other touristic places.

Playa del Carmen

This used to be a place where all of the Europeans came to enjoy the beach avoiding the noisiness of Cancun. However, recently this place has turned into second Cancun. From what I have seen, there are many American milliners, and those who have too much money are spending millions on all the fancy and new condos. The beaches are almost all public, however, the beach looked smaller because of the condos that are built five meters back of the beach. Like Japan, there are shopping malls with all the familiar shopping brands and Starbucks and convenience store is found every 50 meters. For a day I felt completely convenient, eating sandwiches at Subway without worrying about what to eat like every other day of travel. For the first time in six months, I was living like how I live in Tokyo. Even when I am in Guadalajara, I have got an Uber to get to the nearest shopping mall. However, within walking distance from the hostel, there are 2 malls and I bought a new pair of shoes. I am trying to save money as much as possible when I am traveling, so I walk about 20000 steps a day. For this reason, the shoes which I had only for 3 months broke. In Mexico, Taf and Zara are very cheap, and I got a pair of FILA for around 50 bucks. One more thing I realized during this trip; We, Japanese people are rich. For example, 50 bucks are about 3 hours of pay in that English language school I used to teach in Shibuya prior to study abroad. I can do cheap backpacking, but I could also spend more money in countries like Mexico.

Also, in Playa del Carmen, there are many stores that sell Cuban tobacco. I bought a cigarette size of tobacco. I don’t know if it was good or not, but compared to cigarettes, cigarette burns in 5 minutes but tobacco lasted so much longer. I was tired of the smokiness. Tobacco is not for a person. The best is to share with people in house parties, like shisha. Also, it goes well with tequila.

There are many Argentinians in Playa. The inflation is magnificent and living abroad is so much better for them. The club scene in Playa is pretty big. There are famous night clubs and all the rich people wear nice cloth to show up like Andares in Guadalajara. However, the music was mostly American music, even though Playa is in Mexico. Those places are 60US for a night with an open bar. There are dancers in front of the clubs so it was fun just passing by. It didn’t seem like there were so many drunk people who seem to be having a really really good time, people were checking out others. Maybe because it was Thursday.

Right now is the dry season in Mexico and there were hardly any days with clouds, but the last two days in Yucatan was cloudy. If it was sunny, I’d have loved to stay more days. What I didn’t like is those young guys that tell me ‘cannabis, cocaina’. It’s coming to a point where it’s annoying.

Cozumel

I found a cheap flight from Cozumel island in December, which became the last place for me in this trip. Also, the airport was walking distance from the center. This place is famous for diving. However, I have no experience of diving and I have done enough snorkeling in Belize. This place is calmer than Tulum or Playa.

I heard that this place is expensive but I noticed that there is a touristic town and local town. I thought the price is very expensive being an island, but the local town was mainly on the big road that started from the airport. I ate in the mercado or in this big street. I also went to the shopping mall, but unlike Playa, it was a place to buy Mexican souvenirs that come to Cozumel on a cruise ship for a day or two. I like the hostel in Cozumel. Unlike any other hostel, the staff was English native, there are curtains in dorm rooms, shower and bathroom are separate from the room, there is a big community space, clean and the facility was new. In the hostels before, I always talked in Spanish. Even though my Spanish got much better over this winter, it’s so much more comfortable talking in English. Also, the hostels before often had no curtains so I always woke up around 6 or 7 in the morning. You also don’t need to think about much privacy. For us Japanese, it’s necessary that things are clean.

As I traveled, I started judging places that I went and I became so much pickier because I knew more places that are nicer. The only places that I stayed over two nights were Antigua and Flores. For me, my favorite thing when I am traveling is discovering places that are unknown and it is unavoidable to feel deja vu. Only I have regrets for Guatemala City being said that it’s so dangerous and I only stayed for one day. Otherwise, I am happy to have traveled on my own for three weeks. It’s very fun to travel only with the starting point and the finish point. At the end of this trip, I thought that I want to go to Africa after finishing South America. I have a few reasons.
